Changemakers: young people leading change
Changemakers was co-founded in 1994 by Michael Norton, who was its Executive Chair until 2001.
Changemakers pioneered a "young person-led approach" , supporting young people to develop their own solutions to the problems and issues they believed to be important.
Changemakers trained teachers and youth leaders to facilitate the process and encourage the young people to learn from their experience.
Changemakers' "young person-led approach" was central to the design of government's Millennium Volunteers scheme. Changemakers piloted Active Citizenship in Schools as part of the government's development of Citizenship Education. Changemakers has played a leading role in encouraging social enterprise, it ran the Y-Speak youth participation fund for the Department or Education and Skills, and it works closely with UnLtd to deliver youth leadership programmes and awards for young social entrepreneurs.
