If the problems of poverty in the world are to be solved, then the ideas and creative energies of people living in poorer countries should be a driving force. This is why we sought to establish UnLtd first in India and then three years later in 2010 in South Africa.
The initiative is being developed by Heather Brandon in the UK assisted by Kathy Watters and Francois Bonnici in Cape Town, where we have established a charitable trust. The first awards were made in 2010, and by 2012 UnLtd South Africa was running an awards programme and ideas challenges with a staff of three, an Honorary Director, a Programme Manager and an intern, supported by a board of trustees and a UK advisory group.
In order to maximise the effectiveness of what is at the moment a relatively small operation, UnLtd South Africa is focusing its resources in the Western Cape and on social entrepreneurs from 2 specific groups:
- Individuals living/working in the shantytown and slum areas of Khayalitsha, Nyanga, Guguletu, Phillipi and Cape Town to target people with direct access and experience of some of the most acute social problems.
- College students and recent graduates, to tap into their natural energies, ideas and connections, and to build on the increasing focus on entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship.
